Ombudsman Think Tank

I believe that every good idea can be modified and improved upon, and my ideas are no exception. In my report,
"This Dog Don't Hunt: A Critical Analysis of the BCSPCA Community Consultation Process, The Independent Panel's Summary Report and Recommendations, & The SPCA Preliminary Action Plans," I call for a BCSPCA ombudsman and increased government involvement. I intend to develop the concept in a future report; the ideal way to accomplish that, of course, is to consult animal lovers. So please send your opinions and recommendations. The CYA Board has designed two petitions or you can draft a submission that is based purely on your own concerns. It will pass your submissions on to me for inclusion in my report. I thank CYA for and appreciate its support and initiative to take the concept to the public. Many dedicated animal lovers both within and outside of the SPCA sincerely want the best outcome for both the organization and the animals in its care. It is the largest animal welfare fund in BC. Its survival is critical. Research shows that the general public supports independent bodies to oversee charities and to protect donors, even when a charity has not suffered a scandal as the SPCA has. I believe an independent body to ensure that it is truly accountable, transparent and fair is the only way to guarantee the mission, proper priorities and the best possible care for shelter animals in BC. I want to present the SPCA with a model that the public prefers, an ombudsman solely for the SPCA or an ombudsman for all animal organizations and facilities. Public input and debate can only lead to quality care for animals. That is my aim, and I hope it is one you share. Kimberly Daum
